In the 1850s, Africa is the ultimate explorers challenge. Barely mapped and inhabited by tribes unknown to the white man, it is inhospitable and unpredictable. For legendary Irish explorer Richard Burton, the quest is for stimulation as much as immortality. John Hanning Speke, the English aristocrat who joins him in two expeditions into the African interior, believes that success will bring him wealth and adulation. From their first meeting, these opposites are attracted more by circumstances than by inclination. But as the difficult journey takes its toll, Burton and Speke forge a strong bond that comes under intolerable pressure once they are back in England. But history will be the judge of these two intrepid explorers who risked body and soul in their quest for the secret of the Nile.
